News Icon Buzz Created by UConn's Sustainability Project
The University of Connecticut is in the midst of a sustainability project that is transforming the way students eat, and live, on campus. The focus is on locally grown food, and the newest local product is creating a buzz on campus. Steven Anthony is an assistant manager for one of the Dining Halls at UConn. He says employees are encouraged to find local food--vegetables and milk from local farmers, bread baked on campus, and even chickens raised in an on-campus coop. Read/Hear more...

As part of UConn's Department of Dining Services continuing efforts to "Go Green", disposable cups will no longer be available. Please bring your own EcoHusky mug or other recyclable container to use.

A University of Connecticut Department of Dining Services culinary team consisting of Derek Carlsen, Dorothy Hamerstrom, Angela Clark and Lisa Charbonneau took a silver medal at the UMass Culinary Competition held Friday June 20, 2008 at The University of Massachusetts, Amherst Campus Berkshire Dining Commons. Competition was from a field of 15 teams.

UConn's Department of Dining Services Takes Home a Gold Medal in the Thirty-Fifth Annual NACUFS Loyal E. Horton Dining Awards

Everybody deserves recognition for a job well done. In college and university culinary arts, the ultimate professional tribute is the National Association of College and University Foodservice (NACUFS) Loyal E. Horton Dining Award. Named for a NACUFS founder, past president, and highly regarded innovator, the Loyal E. Horton Award salutes the most successful ideas in menus, presentations, special event planning, and new dining concepts.

The University of Connecticut's Department of Dining Services won the coveted Gold Medal in the category of Residence Hall Dining - Single Stand-Alone Concept/Outlet. Their entry was the Whitney/Local Routes Dining facility, the first and only sustainable and locally sourced foods dining facility on the UConn campus. The award will be presented this summer in Washington, DC at the NACUFS 50th Anniversary Conference.

Department of Dining Services has been nominated for one of the most prestigious awards in the food service industry, the Ivy Awards. They are listed on the ballot in the January issue of Restaurant & Institutions magazine. The award is given at the National Restaurant Show in May. Learn more »

Beginning March 25th, 2008, the UConn Dairy Bar is now selling Department of Dining Services "With the Grain Sandwiches and Wraps" and "Fresh Harvest Salads". The Dairy Bar can accept cash and Husky Bucks (NOT meal points). University members (faculty, staff, and students) presenting a valid UConn ID will be sales tax exempt.

Congratulations! Rebecca Canfield received the Regional Appreciation Award at the recent NACUFS conference in Cobleskill, NY, for her involvement with sustainability within the region, sponsorship of sub-regionals and overall volunteerism within NACUFS.


Congratulations to Dennis Pierce, Director of Dining Services. He has been chosen as the February 2008 FoodService Director of the Month by FoodService Director magazine.


The Department of Dining Services held its annual Culinary Olympics on Thursday January 17, 2008. The event took place at the Putnam dining facility located on the University of Connecticut, Storrs Campus. Learn more »

Rebecca Canfield Is the Staff Winner of the 2006-2007 Environmental Leadership Awards
University of Connecticut and the Environmental Policy Advisory Council (EPAC) recognized Rebecca Canfield with the 2006-2007 ENVIRONMENTAL LEADERSHIP AWARD, in the category of Staff. The 2006-2007 Environmental Leadership awards were presented by Vice Provost Gregory Anderson and VP & COO Barry Feldman in a special ceremony on Tuesday, April 24, 2007.
